The Museum of Transportation sprawls across 129 acres, presenting its vast collection of automobiles, boats, planes, and trains dating from the mid-1800s to the present day. More than 70 massive locomotives reside in the museum, including the largest successful steam locomotive, the Union Pacific Big Boy—though later examinations revealed that the train is actually female. Explore rare autos—including a motor carriage dating back to 1901 and rides owned by Dean Martin and W.C. Fields—and a fleet of military aircraft that constantly snubs visitors by pointing their nose cones skyward. A miniature locomotive leads a following of bright-red cars around the museum grounds, and the hands-on Creation Station gives tots aged 5 and under the opportunity to familiarize themselves with modes of transportation outside of diesel-powered strollers.

Grab a handful of Diesel Dollars and get on board with locomotive, automotive and high-flying fun at the Museum of Transportation. One of St. Louis' great family destinations, the Museum of Transportation, nestled in West St. Louis County on Barrett Station Road, is a treasure trove of classic cars, locomotives, buses, planes and more. Diesel Dollars can be used toward Museum admission, entrance into the Creative Station, miniature train rides, new Museum memberships, birthday parties, or in the Buy The Book Bookmobile.

So much to see! Open during normal business hours, The Earl C. Lindburg Automobile Center houses rare and classic autos and trucks, including the Bobby Darin "Dream Car," a one-of-a-kind custom car designed by Detroit clothing designer Andy Di Dia in 1953. Also on display is the area's largest collection of trains, including freight cars, interurban and city transit, passenger cars, rail maintenance and test cars and rail motive power (the big muscle of the railroad world).

Don't miss the Creation Station, a very fun, hands-on learning environment dedicated to introducing children (ages 5 and under) to all modes of transportation.

Get into the act. Miniature train rides, car shows and special events in the Museum Theater add to the experience at select times of the year.
